FFXIV Nude Mods - The Darkside of Final Fantasy XIV 1

Final Fantasy XIV

The use and distribution of FFXIV nude mods has been a hot-topic over the last couple of years. There’s a lot of interest in them, but the majority of the player base and Square Enix are completely against their existence.

Final Fantasy XIV is one of the most successful MMORPGs to be released in the last decade. Originally released in 2010, the first release of the game didn’t do very well. Naoki Yoshida was then brought in to fix all the issues, and make it appeal to the masses. When something becomes popular, it’s natural to attract every type of person, especially with something as big as an MMORPG.

Also, we can’t forget about ‘Rule 34‘. Rule 34 is essentially an internet rule that states that, if something exists, then there will be explicit images of it online. If you value your search history, I’d suggest not trying to see if it’s correct.

History of FFXIV Nude Mods

While they may have existed earlier, NSFW mods started popping up online around 2015. They were fairly basic, but they did ‘work’. Over the next 3 years more and more mods seemed to pop up, each time getting more detailed, graphic, and realistic.

The mods that were released were nude swaps for all races:

  • Elezen
  • Hyur
  • Lalafell
  • Miqo’te
  • Roegadyn
  • Au Ra

I’d just like to point out, that while I’m writing this as someone who has never installed these mods, the fact that nude Lalafell mods exist is fairly worrying.

However, if you’re hoping to be able to start downloading all of these mods straight away, you’re in for some disappointment. Originally there were a couple of programs that would simply DAT swap current FFXIV files with new ones. However, either due to Square Enix proactively trying to stop such activities, or the programmers struggling to keep up with the many game file changes, most either don’t work anymore or crash a lot.

There was a 4k resolution texture pack floating around in 2018, which includes some ‘interesting’ character model swaps, but it seems to have disappeared from the face of the earth.

It seems that the most reliable programs available in 2020 are those that you have to pay for upfront. Even then, through our research, most of these are still not working properly.

On top of that, there are a lot of ‘secret’ discord servers that have access to these files. It seems like you need to message specific people within the circle, to then be given a discord invite link. Previously these links were just posted publicly on forums, but I guess they received too much attention.

There are lots of FFXIV nude mods in the internet

Are Nude Mods Against TOS?

Yes, they are. Technically, all mods and third-party applications are against ToS. This has always been the case, but I feel like it isn’t enforced heavily.

At the beginning of 2020, Yoshida made this statement:

”First of all, it’s just a talk, but there is something that I would like to talk about. Mainly speaking, there are two things.

Recently…? Recently I think? Around the end of the year and the beginning of the year… there were screenshots where it included mods sort of being going around… and we would like to directly talk about in regards to ‘’tools’’.

But, ‘’it’s not that big of a deal, I just want to play the game as it is’’, perhaps there are players who feel this and so you should change the channel for this part… (laughs)

It’s just a little… a little, we would like to talk about this.

As to what exactly happened or that you didn’t know about this, I’ll go over the overall topic briefly. So people have used this ‘’mod’’ that someone has created to ‘’undress’’ the characters in FFXIV, creating these… screenshots and uploading them online. And people were talking about how Yoshida approves of this ‘’mod culture’’ so it’s ‘’okay to do it’’, and so that’s what happened.

First of all… in the first place obviously… before talking about mods this and that… it goes against the rules. It’s ‘’not allowed’’.

Like I mean… it’s not about mods this and that…. It’s one step before that. First of all, it’s not allowed right? Moreover, right? Like moreso, well if the person themselves went nude and (raises both hands) in their private time, that’s fine. But the ‘’graphical’’ resources is ‘’ours’’. It’s ours… So it’s not allowed, right?

So yeah… even in regards to your account, it would become a penalty, so basically… please stop. Like really, I don’t really think this is strictly about tools or mods, but like to distribute widely, for anyone to be freely access, it could lead to consequences not just to us, as recently the laws in different countries are different, but laws related to adult content is very strict. And so we would like to clearly clarify things in regards to this subject… and it’s not about what’s right or wrong… It’s just ‘’NOT allowed’’.

This statement came from a livestream where the topic was brought up. A lot of people at the time were posting their modded screenshots all over social media, like Twitter, which gave the scene a lot of exposure.

I’ve not read of anyone who has actually been banned from modding their game though, but all it would take is for Square Enix to batch-check everyone’s client files to see who has been doing it. They have stated though several times in the past, that they will never attempt to scan your PCs.

While the act of DAT swapping is harmless, if you feel like you must mod your game, I’d advise against posting images online about it. Especially if it could be traced to your account. Just to be safe.

Aether has been playing World of Warcraft since 2006. In his youth he raided 7 days a week, but now just plays with friends doing Mythic dungeons and Arena. He swaps his main more often than he should.
